Redpanda Serverless is Redpanda's own fully-hosted, pay-as-you-go tier, sold on instant startup and "zero ops." Unlike some managed Kafka pricing, its per-GB rates are actually published, which makes a real comparison possible. Look past the headline pitch, though, and two things are worth knowing before you build on it: a hard throughput ceiling on every serverless cluster, and a lower uptime bar than the number ntail publishes.
The workload
10 MiB/s of compressed data in, 20 MiB/s of compressed data out (a common 2× fan-out), 7‑day retention — roughly 6.3 TB retained at any time, the same workload as our other comparisons. Redpanda isn't part of ntail's interactive pricing calculator — the figures below are modeled separately from Redpanda's own published rates, so treat them as directionally accurate rather than as precise as the rest of our comparisons.

A real ceiling on "serverless"
Every Redpanda Serverless cluster is capped at 100 MB/s of average ingress, with a hard limit of 5,000 partitions. Below that line the pitch holds up: no cluster to size, instant startup. Above it, you're not scaling the same product anymore — you're migrating to a different Redpanda tier, with its own sizing and its own capacity planning, which is exactly the work "serverless" is supposed to remove. ntail's capacity follows your traffic automatically with no published throughput ceiling to plan around in the first place.
A lower bar on uptime
Redpanda's own Serverless page states a 99.9% uptime SLA. That's just over 43 minutes of allowed downtime a month. ntail's contractual SLA is 99.99% — under 4.4 minutes a month, roughly a tenth as much. Both numbers are the provider's own published commitment, not a benchmark either of us ran; it's worth reading the actual SLA percentage rather than the "zero compromise" copy above it.
Pricing you have to go find
To ntail's credit for the competition: Redpanda does publish real per-GB numbers, which is more than some managed Kafka providers do. But they're not on the main Serverless product page — you'll find them in a separate blog post or by working through Redpanda's own pricing calculator. ntail's rate card is three numbers on the pricing page itself, with no calculator required to find the starting price.

Which one is right for you
If your workload comfortably sits under the throughput ceiling and 99.9% uptime is good enough for what you're building, Redpanda Serverless is a real, transparently-priced option. But if you'd rather not plan around a per-cluster cap on a "serverless" product, or the SLA gap matters for what you're running, it's worth modeling your own workload against ntail's pricing, or seeing how ntail compares to the other managed streaming options.
